UK teachers unions on Sunday warned the government that it may be too soon for primary aged children to return to school, as they prepare to reopen on Monday as a part of the easing of new coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Speaking to UK broadcaster Sky, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union Dr. Mary Bousted recommended that schools should stay closed until the middle of June, when "the rates of infection in children have halved and then their ability to pass along the virus will have halved."

Schools are set to open on 1 June as a part of the easing of lockdown restrictions brought in place to combat the new virus, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson had previously said lifting restrictions would depend on the infection rate being low enough.

On Sunday the UK reported a further 1,936 cases and 113 deaths related to COVID-19.
