Health workers were out on the streets of the southern English city of Portsmouth on Friday to give COVID-19 and flu jabs to homeless and vulnerable people.

"We're giving vaccines out to anyone that is homeless, unregistered, migrants," said Carole Phillips, the vaccine official leading the campaign.

She said that many in the coastal city hadn't yet been vaccinated, adding that homeless people were particularly at risk during the winter.

The omicron variant of the virus is now dominant in Britain and COVID-19 cases have surged by more than 50% in a week.

The country reported nearly 120,000 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest yet during the pandemic and the second day the number has topped 100,000.
