UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Actor Idris Elba Join Downing Street Meeting on Knife Crime
Elba met Starmer during the election campaign earlier this year and pushed for the Labour Party to prioritise knife crime.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was joined by actor Idris Elba at a meeting on Monday about the government's plans to tackle knife crime.
The Home Office announced the creation of the "Coalition to Tackle Knife Crime."
The organisation will bring together campaigners, young people, community leaders, families affected by violence, technology companies, sports groups, police and educators.
At the meeting, Starmer promised to follow through with his election promises to reduce knife crime, including addressing the online sale of weapons.
Elba met Starmer during the election campaign earlier this year and pushed for the Labour Party to prioritise knife crime.
Speaking at the meeting, he said "talk is good, but action is more important."
The actor set up an organization called "Don't Stop Your Future" which campaigns to stop youth knife violence.
He told attendees at the meeting that he had launched the campaign in response to the death of a teenager at a underground rail station in London around six years ago.
"It's very difficult to talk about knife crime without emotion," he said.
“But I think we should try as best as we can to push and use that emotion to offer solutions with it.”
