United Kingdom: The plan for a UK smoking ban, as reiterated by King Charles, has included raising the legal smoking age by one year each year, resulting in a situation where a 14-year-old today will never be legally able to buy a cigarette. In the UK King's first State Opening of Parliament as Monarch, it was stated that the legislation would be aimed at creating a ‘smoke-free generation’.
The plans had been previously announced by the Prime Minister at the 2023 Conservative Party conference in Manchester. He detailed that the Government would introduce a plan to phase out the sale of cigarettes for the next generation, which was considered a major step forward for overall health in the UK. The PM also pledged to crack down on the sale of disposable vapes to children, emphasising that more must be done to restrict their availability to under-18s.
UK PM Sunak on smoking
While addressing the concern of smoking, Sunak said, “Four in five smokers have started by the time they’re 20, later the vast majority try to quit but many fail because they’re addicted and they wish they had never taken up the habit in the first place." Further, he added that if the UK citizens could break that cycle, then they would be on their way to ending the biggest cause of preventable death and disease in the country, reported the Independent.
UK PM Rishi Sunak has already proposed a plan to control the smoking problem and has raised the smoking age by one year every year. "That means a 14-year-old today will never legally be sold a cigarette and that they and their generation can grow up smoke-free," said Sunak during the speech.

British smoking laws and how helpful it could be?
The current smoking laws in the UK: The legal age for buying cigarettes and other tobacco products across the UK is 18, a change that was implemented in 2007 when it was raised from 16 by the last Labour government. In July 2007, it also became illegal to smoke in any pub, restaurant, nightclub, and most workplaces and work vehicles, anywhere in the UK.
As of now, individuals must be 18 or older to buy and use a vape in the UK. There are currently no nationwide legal restrictions or laws enforced on vaping in public areas, and the use of vapes indoors is generally allowed unless a specific establishment has imposed a ban.

Under this new ban, it is expected to follow a similar format to the measures introduced in New Zealand last December, when they banned the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009. The reform has a gradual process where the government would keep on increasing the legal smoking age, making it illegal for the next generation to buy cigarettes.
Although exact plans are unclear, it is expected that the UK would also ban the sale of cigarettes and tobacco to anyone born after a certain date, raising the legal age for smoking every year. If the UK implemented the rules by 2027, anyone aged 14 and under now will never be able to buy a cigarette.
While the exact plans remain unclear, it is anticipated that the UK would also prohibit the sale of cigarettes and tobacco to individuals born after a specific date, progressively raising the legal age for smoking each year. If the rules were to be implemented in the UK by 2027, it would mean that anyone aged 14 and under at present would never be able to purchase a cigarette, as per the UK News report.
