Former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg spelled out his evironmental agenda in a roundtable meeting with Nevada environmentalists and tribal representatives.

Buttigieg said his goal as president would be to double clean energy production by 2025 and have a zero emission clean energy system by 2035."That's going to involve a lot of change and a lot of investment," Buttigieg said."I think it's going to involve a lot of opportunity."

Buttigieg said the federal government needs to strengthen protections for public lands "that are often under threat from development for oil, gas and mining industries, without regard to the long term consequences."And he said the federal government needs to "secure a sustainable water future for Nevada and for the West."

Buttigieg said he is opposed to storing nuclear waste from around the U.S. at Yucca Mountain, saying, "as long as the people of Nevada are opposed to storage at Yucca Mountain, then so am I."And he said the federal government needs to "recognize the rights of tribal nations to manage their reservation communities and resources, and partner with tribes in a way that respects the sovereignty of those who are tribal citizens, as well as U.S. citizens."
