Drivers with smartphones these days don't often get truly lost, thanks to navigation services such as Google Maps. But what happened in Colorado is a reminder that even with new technology, some shortcuts can still go very wrong.

A woman who faced traffic on her way to the airport said that she thought there might be a detour and pulled up directions on Google Maps. The navigation system initially said 43 minutes and then suggested a different exit that would shorten the time to arrive to 23 minutes instead. However, as per accounts, about a hundred cars formed a queue on the road and got trapped behind a couple of cars that couldn’t make it through because they got stuck in mud. To compound the problem, the cars couldn’t make a u-turn as the road was only broad enough to handle one car at a time, as a result of which some 100 cars were in a deadlock.

Google released a statement on this incident saying that they take several factors into account when they determine driving routes, including the size of the road and the directness of the route. Their aim is to provide the best and easiest routes; due to unforeseen events, weather issues can arise. They further added that they encourage all drivers to follow local laws and use their best judgment while driving.

The citizens of Colorado, however, learned the hard way that technology isn't always foolproof.
