On the 101st anniversary of the adoption of the 19th amendment giving American women the right to vote, Speaker Nancy Pelosi attended a rally in San Francisco to urge California women to get out the vote.

The event marking Women's Equality Day comes about three weeks before the deadline for Californians to vote in the recall election of Governor Gavin Newsom.

In addition to Pelosi, the rally also featured several prominent local Democrat speakers who have urged Californians to vote no on the recall of Newsom, also a Democrat.

Some party officials have expressed concern over voter apathy among Democrats in the recall race, even though they outnumber Republicans in the state.

GOP voters in California are expected to turn out in high numbers given the rare chance to defeat a prominent Democrat in the liberal-leaning state.

Republican Larry Elder has emerged as a GOP front-runner in the race but the conservative talk show host has been criticized for writing in a 2002 book that employers should be able to ask women if and when they plan to get pregnant.

State and federal laws ban workplace discrimination based on pregnancy.
