In a notable address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, former President Bill Clinton made a playful remark about his age, asserting that he is "still younger" than former President Donald Trump. This comment was part of a broader speech where Clinton, now 78, reflected on the changing dynamics of age in American politics.

Clinton’s speech highlighted the attempt of Democrats to Trump on his age. They are now able to do this because their own candidate, Harris, is quite younger than Trump. Republicans successfully used Biden's age to target him and the Democrats, perhaps a bit too successfully. "I'm still younger than Donald Trump," Clinton pointed out, noting that he is about two months younger than Trump. Both are younger than President Biden but much older than Vice President Kamala Harris, who represent a younger generation in politics.

Here is what you need to know

Clinton’s address, which lacked the energetic style of his previous convention speeches, focused on the importance of the upcoming election. He and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have strongly endorsed Harris since Biden's decision to step aside. Their support has bolstered Harris's campaign, adding the influence of one of the most prominent families in Democratic politics.

Clinton also criticized Trump’s approach to campaigning, saying, “Now, how does Donald Trump use his voice? He mostly talks about himself. ... The next time you hear him, don't count the lies — count the I's.”

The former president’s speech underscores the generational shift in this election, marking the first presidential race since 1976 without a member of the Bush, Clinton, or Biden families running for White House. Clinton’s appearance at the DNC was a key moment as he, alongside Hillary Clinton, continued to lend their significant support to Harris’s campaign.
