The administrators of the SAT say the exam will move from paper and pencil to a digital format.

They say the shift will boost the test's relevancy in an increasingly test-optional college admissions landscape.

"We feel that schools and students are familiar with teaching and testing digitally, and this is us in some ways, catching up to where they are and getting rid of the number two pencils and the bubble sheets and the shipping and the packing and really trying to make this at its core, a less stressful, less onerous experience for both students and the educators," said Priscilla Rodriguez, College Board, VP of College Readiness Assessments.

Test-takers will be able to use their own laptops. But they will still have to take the test at a monitored site or in school.

The format change is scheduled to roll out internationally next year and in the U.S. in 2024.

More colleges are letting students decide whether to include test scores in their college applications.

The College Board, which administers the SAT, says most students still want to take the test to preserve the option.

"The SAT still is, and colleges are telling us this a vital part of their holistic admissions process, right? Where they look at all aspects that the student submits. And look at them in context, context of where you lived and learn their family situation, et cetera. And when used in context, the S.A.T. helps open doors to students. Doors to colleges and universities, doors to scholarships to pay for those colleges," said Rodriquez.
