Groups of migrants passed through Mexico's southern border on Wednesday despite the partial closure of that frontier due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, the nation's government announced it was imposing new measures at its southern border and would only permit crossings it deemed essential.

Despite the restriction, migrants were seen pouring into Frontera Corozal, a small border town not far from the Maya tourist ruins of Yaxchilán, on Wednesday.

They had travelled across the Usumacinta River by boat from Guatemala, which is located a five-minute boat ride away.

The scene, witnessed by the Associated Press on Wednesday morning, repeats day and night, according to local authorities.

The groups of migrants have mainly come from Central American nations such as Honduras and have included small children.
