Israel's Unit 504: The secretive spy wing that exposed Hamas when Mossad and Shin Bet almost failed

Hamas' incursion into border towns of Southern Israel and its brutal attack on the Israeli civilians was not only the deadliest attack but one of the biggest intelligence failures of the Israel’s national intelligence agency Mossad. Ranked among the world's top notch Intelligence agencies such as America's CIA the Israeli agency failed to deter the Hamas onslaught. But the Israel Defence Force (IDF)'s spy wing, Unit 504, has played a pivotal role in the war that broke out in response to Hamas' raid and its armed terrorists taking scores of civilians hostages including the foreign nationals. 

Hamas' inhuman assaults on the Israeli civilians laid bare its brutalities infront of the world. In retaliation, IDF launched a ground offensive deep into the Gaza enclave to root out the Hamas' covert tunnel labyrinth, and its military infrastructure hidden beneath the civilian facilities. Israel Defense Forces' spy wing Unit 504, sine then, has been at forefront of the ground battles waged by troops against terrorism. 

What is IDF Unit 504 ?

Unit 504 is part of the Intelligence Directorate of Israel Defence Forces, or it can be simply termed as Mossad of the Israeli military. The goals of the IDF Unit 504, one of the most secretive unit, are limited as compared to that of Mossad's. But the Israeli Army's spying unit has had a more active role to play during the military operations inside the besieged Gaza strip.

When and why was IDF Unit 504 formed ?

The failures always lead to concrete steps worldwide; be it National Investigation Agency of India post 26/11 deadly attack or the decision to form IDF Unit 504 after Yom Kippur War in 1973 following the major failure of Shin Bet and Mossad. Even then, these reliable agencies failed to report about Hamas' planning of an assault of such a massive scale on the land of Israel jointly by Arab countries.

The decision was taken by the then Government to empower Shin Bet and Mossad with additional unit that will focus on the military operations in the area. The idea was to provide additional hand to existing intelligence agencies so that incase of a miss by single agency, the alternative inputs gathered by other agency can be used for territorial integrity of Israel.

IDF Unit 504 Key Goal- The Lebanon Heights

Since the Yom Kippur War started with attack from the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights, IDF's Unit 504 was tasked to focus on operations and planning deeply in Lebanon front. The focused approach of Unit 504 in Lebanon gave Mossad a space to focus its resources on the bigger threat Iran which had its allies in the region to pose larger threat to Israel.

It is post establishment of IDF Unit 504 that Mossad started focusing on International Operations including thwarting the development of nuclear arms in the region and has undertaken a number of secret operations to stymie the Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The shifting of IDF Unit 504 from Lebanon to Gaza

For all these years, IDF Unit 504 was considered to be one tacking threat from Lebanon and the prime focus on Gaza Strip was with Shin Bet along with wider operations of Mossad. But soon after the attack on October 07, IDF made announcement that change has been implemented and Unit 504 is carrying out operations inside the Gaza Strip. On October 08, Unit 504 built its makeshift headquarters in Southern Israel and very soon the strength of the Unit was done manifold within hours and they activated their assets inside the Gaza strip.

The role of Unit 504 is currently focused on the ongoing operations inside Gaza strip and are limited in scope in comparison to Mossad and Shib Bet which aims at long term plot of the Hamas. Unit 504 aims to bring out the information that can help in the immediate next step by Israel Defence Forces operating inside Gaza Strip.

Hundreds of Hamas terrorists arrested by Unit 504 has not helped Israel forces to preempt the strategy of Hamas including ambushes but also exposed Hamas' rampant use of civilian infrastructures including hospitals, schools and bedroom of children for their terror operations.
