Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) of Pakistan 's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), effective September 30, 2024, succeeding Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who has held the position since 2021. Malik's appointment comes at a critical juncture for Pakistan's intelligence community, as the nation navigates complex domestic and international challenges.

Currently serving as the adjutant general at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, Malik oversees key administrative functions within the Pakistan Army. His previous command roles include leading the Infantry Division in Balochistan and an Infantry Brigade in Waziristan, both regions vital to Pakistan's internal security strategy.

Lt Gen Malik's extensive experience in military training includes serving as chief instructor at Pakistan 's National Defence University (NDU) and as an instructor at the Command and Staff College in Quetta. His varied leadership roles have established him as a respected and seasoned military officer.

A graduate of Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom, Malik's educational background complements his operational expertise. His appointment was made by the prime minister in consultation with the army chief, a customary practice reflecting the significance of the ISI's role in shaping Pakistan 's security and foreign policy.
