The World Happiness Report 2025, released on March 20, ranks countries based on factors like social support, economic stability, health, freedom, generosity, and the perception of corruption. Finland remains the happiest country in the world, followed by Denmark and Iceland. Afghanistan ranked the lowest, due to challenges faced by Afghan women, with Sierra Leone and Lebanon following closely behind.
India ranked 118 out of 147 countries. While it ranked well for social support, thanks to its community-focused culture and family structures, it scored poorly on freedom, reflecting a lack of perceived choice in society. India's ranking has improved over the years; it was ranked 144 in 2012, and its highest ranking was 94 in 2022.
Among its neighbors, Pakistan ranked 109, Sri Lanka at 133, Bangladesh at 134, Nepal at 92, and China at 68.
In the study, happiness was also linked to “caring and sharing,” with people who help others or feel supported by their communities reporting higher satisfaction levels. The report emphasized the positive effects of caring for others, both for the giver and the receiver.
The United States and the United Kingdom saw drops in rankings, with the U.S. falling to its lowest position ever at 24, largely due to rising loneliness.
