The military carried out patrols in the Colombian capital of Bogota on Tuesday to ensure stricter restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus were being observed.

51,291 citizens have been infected, and more than 1,000 have died from the disease.

Military personnel equipped with biosecurity equipment to avoid contamination, carried out the patrols during the day and night primarily in Chapinero Municipality, one of Bogota's eight most-infected districts.

The mayor declared new stricter quarantine measures in various areas of the city, especially in the eight neighbourhoods in the south and centre of the capital.

More than 2.7 million people will have to isolate, while only one family member will be allowed to leave home to buy food or supplies.

The new restrictions are in effect until August 23.
