Musk to remove 'block' on X: In a move that has left many users speculating about Twitter's future direction, Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), responded to a post on the platform hinting at the possibility of removing the block feature.

Elon Musk's response to a Tesla fan account's question about the utility of blocking versus muting raised eyebrows across the platform. Musk stated, "Block is going to be deleted as a 'feature', except for DMs. Makes no sense." This comment has ignited discussions about whether this change is part of X's broader roadmap, a casual remark, or an attempt to incite reactions.

For numerous users, blocking serves as a safety feature, allowing them to restrict specific accounts from interacting with them, viewing their tweets, or following them. This proposed change, resembling the discontinuation of the platform's old verification system, has stirred concerns and backlash from users.

Tool to safeguard user interactions

Twitter, on its help page, acknowledges blocking as a tool for users to control their experience and safeguard their interactions. It prevents designated accounts from engaging with them, observing their content, or becoming followers. Unlike muting, blocking is transparent and notifies the blocked account.

The potential removal of the block feature could impact users who rely on it to combat spam and harassment on their timelines.

Some users have also turned to blocking to counter the prioritisation of responses from premium accounts over non-paying users. Public figures, too, have found blocking to be an effective way to fend off online harassment.

While Musk has emphasised that the block feature will still be retained for direct messages, the implications of this change are yet to be fully understood. Given Twitter's history of reconsidering decisions, the fate of this feature is uncertain. Musk's reversal of the decision regarding the platform's light-mode option serves as an example of the potential for shifts in direction based on user feedback.
