The Thai Stock Exchange (SET) paused all trading activity for the afternoon session on Friday after a powerful earthquake struck neighbouring Myanmar, causing tremors in Thailand's capital, Bangkok.
"Following the earthquake incident, the Stock Exchange of Thailand hereby announces the immediate suspension of all trading activities. The closure affects all markets, including SET, the Market for Alternative Investment (MAI), and the Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX), for today's afternoon session," the bourse operator said on its website.

A significant 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Thai capital of Bangkok on Friday, resulting in buildings swaying. Germany's GFZ Center for Geosciences indicated that the midday tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located in neighbouring Myanmar, as per initial reports.
Southeast Asia was hit by two strong earthquakes on Friday, causing structural disruption in Bangkok and forcing people to evacuate their homes.

The US Geological Survey and Germany's GFZ Center for Geosciences reported that the midday tremor had a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6. 2 miles), with the epicentre situated in Myanmar, according to preliminary findings.
A subsequent quake, registering a magnitude of 6. 4, shook the region 12 minutes later. The rooftop pools of high buildings in Bangkok caused water to spill out while debris from several structures slid down.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra convened an emergency meeting to evaluate the quake's impact. The greater Bangkok area is home to over 17 million residents, many of whom reside in high-rise apartments.

The benchmark SET index was last trading 1.05% lower at an over-one-week low of 1,175.45 points. It traded around that level most of the session as stocks remained pressured by new U.S. auto tariffs.
