The government of India has made an announcement notifying a 24% hike in the salaries, allowances, and pensions of Members of Parliament (MPs) and former MPs, starting from April 1, 2023.
The All India Radio News in a post on X informed that the monthly salary of MPs has been revised from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.24 lakh, while also increasing their daily allowances and pension benefits.
Additionally, the daily allowance for sitting MPs has been raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500, the post added.
Former MPs will now be receiving a pension of Rs 31,000 every month, up from the previous Rs 25,000.
This revision was carried out under the 'Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act' and it is based on the Cost Inflation Index specified in the Income Tax Act of 1961.
This is also the first revision in the salaries as well as allowances for MPs ever since 2018.
The last time the salaries and allowances were revised, the base salary of MPs was set at Rs 1,00,000 per month, alongside a Rs 70,000 constituency allowance to cover office expenses as well as voter interactions.
