Shiba Inu, one of the most popular meme crypto tokens, has submitted an application for a ‘.shib’ domain within the Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS).

Internet domain company D3, via a disclosure on December 19, announced its collaboration with Shiba Inu, to secure the ‘.shib’ Top-Level Domain (TLD). D3, which specialises in next-generation domains facilitating interoperability between Web2 and Web3 platforms, highlighted the limitations of existing domain extensions.

Specifically, while Web3 domains like ‘.crypto’ and ‘.eth’ lack compatibility with conventional internet tools such as web browsers and email due to their non-DNS operation, Web2 domains like ‘.com’ and ‘.net’ face challenges integrating with Web3 functionalities like digital wallets.

After the application receives approval from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), SHIB coin holders will gain the capability to formulate email addresses incorporating the ‘.shib’ suffix, ensuring compatibility with standard email applications, as outlined by D3.

Furthermore, D3 intends to introduce ‘name tokens’ tailored for SHIB users. These tokens aim to streamline transactions across multiple blockchains, negating the necessity for protracted alphanumeric wallet addresses.

The announcement did not elicit any market reaction for SHIB, with its value registering a marginal decline of less than a per cent after D3's revelation, according to blockchain metrics.
