Ibadat, insaniyat, and inayat, top legacy of Ratan Tata: Tata Group Ex director

Ibadat (devotion), insaniyat (humanity), and inayat (grace) are three core traits that defined Ratan Tata’s leadership, R Gopalakrishnan,  former director of Tata Group in an exclusive conversation with Republic Business said.

Gopalakrishnan, who closely collaborated with Tata throughout his tenure, highlighted Tata's long-term vision, stating, “He did not believe in the financial valuation of the company; he believed in the perpetual value of the company.” This perspective shaped Tata’s approach to business, focusing on sustainability and ethical practices over short-term gains.

Describing Tata’s management style, Gopalakrishnan noted, “He was not a sprint racer; he was a relay racer.” This metaphor encapsulates Tata’s patience and strategic thinking, always considering what could be done next rather than resting on past achievements. “His mind was not what you have done; instead, he will always ask what else can be done,” Gopalakrishnan explained.

The former director also emphasised Tata’s human-centric approach. “He was always softer on the human side,” he said, reflecting the ethos of leadership that prioritises empathy and compassion. This mindset is crucial in fostering a culture of trust and respect within the organisation.

Gopalakrishnan concluded by highlighting the legacy that Tata leaves behind: “It’s not just Ratan Tata’s greatness; it’s amanat that is being handed over from generation to generation.” As the fifth chairman of the Tata Group, Tata’s influence will undoubtedly continue to shape the company’s values and direction for years to come.
