In a historic moment for Indian aviation, Air India welcomed the delivery of its first Airbus A350-900 on Saturday, December 23, making it the first Indian carrier to operate this cutting-edge aircraft type. This acquisition represents a pivotal chapter in Air India's ongoing transformation story and is expected to revolutionise long-haul air travel in the country.
The A350-900, renowned for its ultimate flexibility and versatility, boasts an all-new design that optimises capacity, range, and economics while prioritising passenger comfort. With a standard three-class configuration accommodating 300-350 passengers, this aircraft is suitable for short-range segments as well as ultra-long-range routes of up to 9,700 nautical miles (18,000 kilometers) non-stop.

Air India's A350-900 comes equipped with the state-of-the-art Airspaceâ„¢ cabin, setting new standards of comfort for passengers throughout their journey. The cabin offers a spacious and elegantly lit environment, complemented by wider seats that enhance the overall flying experience. Passengers can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere due to the cabin's quietness, while the latest in-flight entertainment, including Wi-Fi and mobile phone connectivity, ensures connectivity and entertainment throughout the flight.
Transforming the travel experience
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, expressed his enthusiasm for this milestone, emphasising the A350's significance as a symbol of the new age of flying. Wilson noted that the A350 promises a world-class, long-haul travel experience on the airline's non-stop routes, providing unparalleled comfort, excellent flight economics, and state-of-the-art technology.

Aircraft configuration and operational plans
Air India's A350-900 is configured in a three-class cabin with 316 seats, featuring 28 private Business Class suites, 24 Premium Economy seats with extra legroom, and 264 spacious Economy Class seats. The aircraft is set to enter commercial service in January 2024, initially operating domestically for crew familiarisation and later expanding to longer-haul routes across continents.
This delivery is the first of the 20 Airbus A350-900s ordered by Air India, with an additional five scheduled for delivery through March 2024. Air India's comprehensive order book includes firm orders for 250 new aircraft with Airbus, comprising 20 A350-1000s. The airline has also finalised orders for 220 new Boeing flights, collectively valued at $70 billion at list prices.
