AMD Launches New AI Solutions for Data Centers to personal computers

AMD, the Santa Clara-based chipmaker, has launched a suite of cutting-edge products spanning data centre AI accelerators to personal computing, capitalising on the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) landscape.

The recently unveiled products include the AMD Instinct MI300 Series, targeted at data centre AI acceleration, along with ROCm 6, an open software stack featuring enhanced support for large language models (LLMs). Additionally, the Ryzen 8040 Series processors, equipped with Ryzen AI capabilities, were introduced to cater to personal computing needs.

AMD CEO Lisa Su expressed confidence in AI being the cornerstone of future computing. She highlighted AMD's unique positioning to power AI infrastructure across diverse domains, from expansive cloud setups to enterprise clusters, intelligent embedded devices, and personal computers.

The Instinct MI300 GPUs were lauded as the world's highest-performing accelerators for generative AI, experiencing robust demand. Su emphasised their traction with major cloud entities, leading server providers, and innovative AI startups, foreseeing accelerated innovation within the AI ecosystem.

Addressing the AI market's growth potential, Su cited projections indicating a staggering compound annual growth rate of 70%, set to propel the market from its current $45 billion valuation to an estimated $400 billion by 2027.

Victor Peng, President of AMD, emphasised the Instinct MI300 Series' advanced design and capabilities, positioning them for widespread adoption in cloud and enterprise deployments. Collaborations with industry players aim to expedite the availability of MI300 solutions, driving innovation in AI across sectors.

Noteworthy customers leveraging AMD's Instinct accelerator portfolio include Microsoft, which announced the Azure ND MI300x v5 VM series powered by AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators, optimised for AI workloads.

AMD's Instinct Platform, built on an Open Compute Project design, incorporates eight MI300X accelerators, boasting an industry-leading 1.5TB HBM3 memory capacity and signalling a robust generative AI platform.

The company's Advancing AI event introduced the latest AMD Ryzen 8040 Series processors, emphasising their robust AI compute capabilities. Additionally, the Ryzen AI 1.0 software stack enables easy deployment of AI-capable apps for Windows applications using pretrained models.

Looking ahead, AMD revealed plans for the next-gen 'Strix Point' CPUs slated for a 2024 launch, featuring the AMD XDNA 2 architecture promising over a threefold increase in AI compute performance compared to the prior generation, facilitating novel generative AI experiences.

Moreover, AMD unveiled ROCm 6, the latest iteration of its open-source software stack tailored for AMD Instinct GPUs, optimising support for generative AI, specifically large language models.
