As the world awaits Sunita Williams ' return to Earth after the success of the SpaceX Crew-10 mission, there are certain challenges that she and her crew members might face once she lands.
NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, along with her crew members Butch Wilmore, Nick Hague and the Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov have departed for Earth, at present.
The Founder of aerospace startup Spantrik, Kajal Rajbhar decodes what these challenges can be, in an exclusive interview with Republic Digital .
According to Kajal Rajbhar one can "understand this as a re-entry from the space to the Earth."
In four phases she goes on to explain the process. In the first phase, the thrusters will be lowered into the orbit and then the spacecraft into Earth's atmosphere. The second phase is atmospheric entry, wherein once the spacecraft enters the atmosphere it experiences an intense amount of friction. There is a sheet which protects "the module from burning," she said. The next phase is parachute deployment, which is done once the spacecraft has accomplished a relatively safer speed and the last stage is the crash-down or landing, she added.
She explains that all astronauts go through hyperbaric chamber training, wherein they are all subjected to the exact same kind of conditions that they might face in the spaceship, be it "low pressure" or "high altitude". So even before going for spacewalks they spent around two to four hours taking in pure oxygen so that it can help them decompress. Additionally, there are certain extra cardiovascular and other physical activities that are practised so that the astronauts can go into space.
The one thing that tops the list of health challenges that astronauts can potentially face is "muscle loss," according to Kajal Rajbhar because there is no need for muscular activities in space as there is no weight in space. Additionally, there is bone density, cardiovascular issues, vision problems, among other issues that affect astronauts in space. Further, there are other problems like "swelling of their face as they are exposed to radiations, which can even cause cancer," she added.
