In a significant development, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and close confidant of former President Donald Trump , has voiced apprehensions about the recently announced US auto tariffs.
Speaking on X, a social media platform he owns, Musk emphasized that Tesla will not be immune to the repercussions of the new levies on cars manufactured outside the United States.
"It's important to note that Tesla is NOT unscathed here," Musk stated in his comment on X, highlighting the potential financial strain these tariffs could impose on Tesla's operations. He underscored that the tariff impact on Tesla remains substantial despite the company's efforts to streamline production.
His post also reads, “The tariff impact on Tesla is still significant.”
Global Reaction and Criticism
The announcement of a 25% tariff on imported cars and light trucks by President Trump has sparked international reactions. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the move, labeling it a 'direct attack' on Canadian workers who are integral to the auto industry.
In response to criticisms, the White House defended the tariffs as a critical policy measure aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing and increasing revenue for the US economy.
Trump's Firm Stance on Tariffs
President Trump, addressing reporters at a press conference, reaffirmed his administration's stance on the tariffs, describing them as a permanent fixture of his economic policy. "If you build your car in the United States, there is no tariff," Trump asserted, signaling a strategic shift to incentivize companies to relocate their production facilities within US borders.
When pressed on the possibility of revisiting or altering his stance, Trump adamantly responded, "No," reiterating his commitment to the tariffs taking effect from 'liberation day,' slated for April 2.
