New Delhi: India has taken a big step toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing with the induction of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) into the Indian Army’s arsenal.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) and Bharat Forge Ltd (BFL), ATAGS is set to boost India’s artillery firepower.
The Army has decided to induct 307 ATAGS units as part of its ‘Modernisation through Mediumisation’ strategy.
This 155mm, 52-calibre gun system boasts an impressive range of over 40 km and features a 25-litre chamber—making it the only artillery gun in the world powered by electric drives. This innovation ensures low maintenance and reliable long-term operation.
ATAGS is designed to function autonomously and is integrated with the Artillery Shakti system, allowing automated and synchronized application of firepower across vast areas. The gun can fire all types of 155mm ammunition, including high-explosive, precision-guided, smoke, and illumination shells.
It boasts an enhanced firing rate of five rounds per minute and can sustain 60 rounds per hour, making it a formidable addition to India’s artillery.
The 155 mm/52 Calibre ATAGS will replace the vintage and smaller calibre guns and enhance the artillery capabilities of the Indian Army, Defence Ministry said.
First showcased at the Republic Day Parade in 2017, ATAGS later made history as the first indigenous gun to deliver a ceremonial gun salute during the 75th Independence Day celebrations.
Beyond its advanced capabilities, ATAGS represents a major achievement in India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative, with over 80% indigenous content and the ability to operate in diverse terrains.
The induction of ATAGS is a milestone in India's defence manufacturing, highlighting the nation’s ability to build a robust, indigenous defence industry.
The gun’s advanced capabilities have attracted global attention, with several countries exploring its potential for modernizing their own artillery forces. This development is expected to boost India’s defence exports and strengthen global military partnerships.
The Defence Ministry called the procurement of the gun system a “significant milestone” in the modernisation of the Artillery Regiments, enhancing operational readiness.
ATAGS, renowned for its exceptional lethality, will play a crucial role in bolstering the Army's firepower by enabling precise and long-range strikes, it added.
Looking ahead, ATAGS is set to receive further upgrades and enhancements, including the integration of newer technologies, extended range, and increased firepower. With its induction, the Indian Army reinforces its artillery strength and strengthens India’s position as a key player in the global defence sector.
