Amid escalating threats in the Poonch-Rajouri sector, the Indian Army strategically plans to bolster troop numbers in response to recent attacks on its forces. Military sources revealed on Monday that an additional brigade-size formation was deployed several months ago, with intentions to introduce another brigade and supporting units for enhanced counter-terrorism operations.

Sources within the Army disclosed that the move aims to fortify the counter-terrorist grid in the region and instill confidence among the local population. Concurrently, local police are intensifying their intelligence network, with plans for further reinforcement. This coordinated effort seeks to address the surge in attacks and strengthen the overall security apparatus in the Poonch-Rajouri sector.

Major General heads inquiry into lapses

In tandem with the troop reinforcement, the Army is conducting a Staff Court of Inquiry against the 13-Sector Rashtriya Rifles Commander, a Brigadier, for recurring lapses in operations resulting in significant troop casualties. The inquiry, headed by a Major General, will not only address the lapses but also investigate the deaths of three civilians taken into custody immediately after the Dera ki Gali terror attack, in which four troops lost their lives.

As part of a comprehensive strategy, the local police are augmenting their intelligence capabilities to stay ahead of potential threats. The Army's proactive approach, evident in both troop deployment and the Staff Court of Inquiry, underscores the seriousness with which the security forces are tackling the situation.

Strategic shifts in focus as army responds to regional dynamics

The strategic reinforcement comes against the backdrop of the Pakistan Army and its intelligence agencies attempting to revive terrorism in the Poonch-Rajouri sector. The objective is to exert pressure on the Indian Army, potentially impacting troop deployment on the northern border with China.

The Indian Army has been engaged in a military standoff with China for the last three years, prompting a shift in focus to the northern and eastern fronts. While multiple rounds of talks have been held to de-escalate tensions with China, the recent surge in activities in the Poonch-Rajouri sector necessitates a multifaceted approach.

The security forces have successfully contained terrorist activities in the Kashmir valley, but the evolving regional dynamics demand continuous vigilance and adaptability. As the Army strengthens its presence, conducts inquiries, and collaborates with intelligence agencies, the emphasis remains on ensuring the security and stability of the Poonch-Rajouri sector.
