Historical context of the Western Fleet

Formally established on 1 March 1968, the Western Fleet has played a crucial role in shaping India's maritime capabilities. Its current flagship, the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya (R33), symbolizes the Fleet's strength and versatility. The roots of the Indian Fleet trace back to the post-independence era in 1947 when the Royal Indian Navy was divided between the Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan.

Initially known as the Indian Fleet, it saw its first Indian flag officer, Rear Admiral Ram Dass Katari, in 1956, who assumed the role of the Commander of the Fleet. The narrative highlights the commissioning of INS Mysore in 1957, becoming the flagship of the Indian Fleet, succeeding INS Delhi.
