Barbados, Thailand, Sri Lanka and more: Countries where Indian passport holders can travel visa-free

Thailand and Sri Lanka have recently opened their doors to Indian travellers, allowing them to explore these countries without the hassle of obtaining a visa. This move comes as part of a broader trend, with a total of 24 nations now granting Indian tourists visa-free access.

This list of welcoming countries includes not only Thailand and Sri Lanka but also Angola, Barbados, Bhutan, Dominica, El Salvador, Fiji, and many more. The introduction of visa-free travel is seen as a testament to the growing potential of Indian tourists and the increasing influence of India in global geopolitics.

Effective from November 10, 2023, Indian nationals can visit Thailand without a visa, with this privilege extended until May 10, 2024. Notably, Thailand followed Sri Lanka, which allowed visa-free entry for Indian tourists under a pilot project that began in the last week of October this year, until March 21, 2024.

This exciting prospect offers travellers the chance to explore diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cities without the usual visa application procedures. However, to ensure a seamless and trouble-free experience, Indian travellers should be well-informed about the entry requirements of each destination.

Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.

Maximum Stay Duration: Be aware of the maximum allowed stay duration in each destination, as overstaying can lead to legal consequences.

Proof of Sufficient Funds: Some countries may require proof of financial capability to cover your stay.

Return or onward travel ticket: Often, authorities require proof of your intention to leave within the stipulated time frame.

Accommodation details: Some destinations may need proof of accommodation for your entire stay.

Travel insurance: While not always mandatory, travel insurance is recommended to provide financial protection in unexpected situations.

Criminal record check: Be prepared for potential criminal record checks, as certain offences could result in denied entry.

Customs and declarations: Familiarise yourself with customs and declarations requirements, including prohibited items and cash limits.

Visa-free duration reset: If planning to revisit a visa-free country, understand any regulations on leaving and re-entering to reset your stay duration.

Currently, the Indian passport is ranked 68, with 38 per cent world reach, according to the Passport Index.
