American Universities Have Highest Percentage of Out-of-State Students, Harvard Tops List With 69%
Out of a total first-time enrollment of 1,642 students in Harvard, 1,129 were from out-of-state, 254 were from Massachusetts, & 259 were international students.
New Delhi: American universities have the highest percentage of out-of-state students, with Harvard University leading the list. A recent study by the National Center for Education Statistics has revealed that Harvard University topped the ranking, with 69% of its undergraduate students coming from outside Massachusetts. Out of a total first-time enrollment of 1,642 students, 1,129 were from out-of-state, 254 were from Massachusetts, and 259 were international students.
Luggage shipping company My Baggage analyzed Fall 2022 data from the National Center for Education Statistics, covering 155 universities across the U.S., to determine which institutions had the most first-time undergraduate students from out-of-state.
The University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern University tied for second place, each with 67% of first-time undergraduates from out-of-state. The University of Pennsylvania had 1,624 out-of-state students from a total enrollment of 2,415, while Northwestern enrolled 1,372 out-of-state students from a total of 2,038.
Northeastern University followed in third place with 66% of its students from out-of-state. From a total of 2,518 first-time enrollees, 1,670 were out-of-state students.
In fourth place was the University of Delaware, with 65% of its undergraduate students coming from outside the state. It recorded 3,212 out-of-state students from a total enrollment of 4,906.
Both the University of Alabama and Columbia University ranked fifth, with 64% of their students coming from out-of-state. The University of Alabama had 5,177 out-of-state students, while Columbia University enrolled 979.
Other universities in the top 10 included the University of Mississippi (63%), Brigham Young University (62%), Boston University, and Syracuse University (both 61%), the University of Arkansas (60%), and West Virginia University (57%).

Paul Stewart, Managing Director of My Baggage, commented on the findings, stating that these universities showcase their ability to attract students from across the country, highlighting their academic excellence and nationwide appeal.
