In a significant announcement today, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, took to X (Formerly Known Twitter) to share the approval of a special gift from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the people of Assam. The Prime Minister has given his nod for the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) near Guwahati, adding another prestigious institution to the state's educational landscape.

This decision marks a monumental milestone for Assam, positioning it among the select cities in India to house an array of esteemed educational institutions, including an IIT, AIIMS, and a National Law University. Over the past 18 months, Assam has diligently presented a compelling case to the Honorable Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan and the Education Ministry, advocating for the establishment of the IIM.
“This will be game changer for Assam, making the State an education hub in Eastern India and also help fulfill our economic aspirations. I envisage these premiere institutes to collaborate among themselves and industry to unleash the power of multidisciplinary education,” Assam CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Assam has offered prime land and extended logistical support to facilitate the establishment of the IIM near Guwahati. Moreover, IIM Ahmedabad, one of the premier management institutes in the country, will mentor the upcoming IIM in Guwahati, ensuring a robust framework for its development and growth.
Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his vision for these premier institutes to collaborate not only amongst themselves but also with industries, leveraging the power of multidisciplinary education. This strategic collaboration is expected to significantly contribute to Assam's transformation into an education hub in Eastern India, while also catalyzing the state's economic aspirations.
The swift execution of this initiative from idea to implementation underscores the efficacy of a proactive governance model. The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan for their unwavering cooperation and support in realizing this transformative endeavor.
