Mumbai: Five foreign universities have expressed interest in establishing campuses in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday.
Among these, three are from the US and ranked among the top 50 globally, while one each is from Australia and the UK. The Chief Minister made this statement during a USIBC event.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that state has yet to sign formal agreements with the universities, as they can only do so after receiving approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
He further said that Maharashtra is creating dedicated zones in the new city, with shared infrastructure for specific activities such as education, innovation, data centers, medical facilities, and sports.
The new city will be three times the size of Mumbai and will be well-connected through a 21-km sea link, in addition to having an airport, he added.
The Navi Mumbai airport is expected to begin operations in May this year.
The World Gold Council has also expressed interest in establishing a hub in the new city, Fadnavis stated.
In its effort to promote all-around development, the state is working on transforming Sambhaji Nagar into a hub for electric vehicles and developing Gadchiroli as a steel manufacturing hub with the highest production capacity, he highlighted.
