IIT Madras Zanzibar has launched a new Master of Technology (MTech) Program in Ocean Structures for the academic year 2024-25, offering an exciting opportunity for engineering enthusiasts globally. The two-year program, featuring two distinct streams - 'Offshore and Ship Structures' and 'Port Harbour & Coastal Structures', aims to equip students with specialized skills in ocean engineering.

Applicants with a four-year undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, securing a minimum of 60% marks, are eligible to apply for this prestigious program. Applications are currently open, and interested candidates can submit their applications through the following link: admissions.ge.iitm.ac.in/iitmz-mtechos. The deadline for applications is June 20, 2024.

IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first international campus of an IIT, initiated its academic journey in October 2023. Its programs are inclusive, welcoming students of all nationalities, including Indians. Besides the newly introduced MTech in Ocean Structures, the campus offers a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science and AI, and a two-year MTech degree in Data Science and AI.

Speaking about the significance of the program, Prof. Preeti Aghalayam, Dean of the School of Engineering and Science and Director-in-charge of the Zanzibar campus, IIT Madras, expressed her excitement, stating, "Blue economy is a priority area for Zanzibar and the world today, and engineering programs that will yield skilled human resources in this domain are an urgent need."

Highlighting the career prospects for graduates, Prof. Dr. S. Nallayarasu, Head of the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras, said, "This program opens up new career opportunities for graduate engineers in ocean engineering, including niche areas of the offshore industry, port and harbor development in the region."

The curriculum of the MTech in Ocean Structures program is meticulously designed to cater to the requirements of the Oil & Gas and Maritime sectors. It encompasses fundamental concepts of marine and offshore hydrodynamics, structural design for oil and gas exploration offshore platforms, port infrastructure, and breakwater design.

While the first, second, and fourth semesters will be conducted at the IITM Zanzibar Campus, the third semester will take place at the IIT Madras - Chennai Campus in India. The selection process will comprise a screening test and interview, with marks obtained in undergraduate studies carrying 50% weightage and the remaining 50% assigned to the screening test and interview.
