The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, released on Wednesday, have brought cheer to Indian institutions, with several featuring in the top 50 across subjects. Not only this, an IIT, the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad, has secured the highest rank for an Indian institution, standing at rank 20 globally in Engineering (Mineral and Mining). The IIT Dhanbad has marked a major improvement from its rank of 41 last year.

Notably, 79 Indian institutions have featured in the rankings this year, which is 10 more than the total number of 69 in 2024. Among them, nine Indian institutions have made it to the top 50 across subjects, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, Bombay, Madras, and Kharagpur, and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad and Bangalore.

As per experts, while the rankings bring cheer to several Indian institutions, they also underlined the challenges ahead for Indian institutions. In this year's ranking several institutions have seen a drop in their rankings, including IIT Madras, which has slipped from rank 16 to 31 in Petroleum Engineering. Despite marking a spot among the top 50 institutions, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore have also seen a decline in their rankings in Business and Management Studies.

The Global higher education analysis, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), released the latest rankings on Wednesday, showcasing the dominance of foreign institutions. Notably, only one private Chennai-based Indian institution, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, featured in the top 50. The institution has been ranked 26th in Dentistry.

India's top-performing institutions in terms of the number of subjects they featured in the rankings are the IITs, in Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Madras, Delhi, Guwahati, and Roorkee, along with the University of Delhi, JNU, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

Of these 10 institutions, the IISc recorded a fall in its rank in more subjects than a rise, with its performance improving in five subjects and falling in six compared to the 2024 ranks. Eight of these institutions have seen their best ranks fall this year compared to last year.

The rankings come at a time when the Indian government is pushing for greater autonomy and flexibility for institutions to improve their global rankings. The government has also announced plans to increase funding for research and development, which is expected to help institutions improve their research output and global rankings.

Experts believe that the Indian institutions will need to focus on improving their research output, faculty quality, and internationalization to improve their global rankings.
