Recently, Indian authorities have rescued 283 Indian nationals who were trapped in a fake job scam in Myanmar and Thailand. Most of the victims, who were IT professionals, had been lured by the promise of high-paying jobs abroad. Instead, they found themselves victims of a human trafficking and cyber fraud.

These individuals were forced to work in fraud-based cyber scams, targeting people worldwide. Many were subjected to abuse and threats, with some being told they would be killed if they did not cooperate with the criminals. 

Intelligence reports indicate that Myanmar’s Myawaddy region and Thailand’s border areas have become hotspots for international fraud. 

Fake Job Scam in Myanmar and Thailand 

The ministry of external affairs on Tuesday issued a warning, to Indian nationals, advising them to be cautious and to verify the credentials of foreign employers before accepting job offers, after 266 men and 17 women were rescued from scam call centers in Myanmar's Myawaddy. 

The ministry stated that Indian embassies worked together with Myanmar and Thailand to rescue Indian nationals in Mae Sot, Thailand. 

"The Government of India has been making sustained efforts to secure the release and repatriation of Indian nationals lured to various southeast Asian countries, including Myanmar, with fake job offers. These persons were subsequently made to indulge in cybercrime and engage in other fraudulent activities in scam centres operating in regions along the Myanmar- Thailand border," MEA said in a statement.
