Update at 5:39 am

The final countdown is on and the clock is steadily ticking as India awaits the result for 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.

Update at 5:17 AM:

The countdown is almost over! The 2019 Lok Sabha elections - the biggest exercise in democracy anywhere in the world with an estimated 900 million-strong electorate exercising their franchise to elect a new government for the next five years - are over and the results are about to be declared.

Accompanied by high-pitched and intense election campaigning, the 2019 polls spanned seven phases across two months, ending on May 19, witnessing the Election Commission handling 22.3 lakh ballot units, 17.3 lakh VVPATs and 16.3 lakh control units. An estimated 67.11 percent voters turned up to cast their votes in this year's elections, which is among the highest-ever turnouts recorded in any parliamentary poll in India since its Independence. To put things into perspective, in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the voter turnout was just a little over 66%, whereas in the first ever elections in 1951-52, it was estimated to be 45%.

Counting of votes is set to begin at 8 am on May 23 in each of the 542 constituencies (the Vellore Lok Sabha polls had been countermanded).

The marathon seven-phased Lok Sabha polls saw popular leaders of the political parties carrying out extensive campaigns, with PM Modi himself addressing 144 rallies across 25 states and 2 Union Territories, and Congress president Rahul Gandhi addressing 128 public meetings, rallies and roadshows spread across 23 states and 2 Union Territories. While the BJP contested the elections on the planks of nationalism, PM Modi's development and welfare schemes and the 'Mahamilavati' nature of the Congress and other Opposition parties' bid to oust the Modi government, the Congress poll pitch comprised allegations over the Rafale deal, 'Chowkidar' attacks and its Nyay income guarantee scheme for farmers. 2019 elections also witnessed a number of instances of political leaders jumping ship, celebrities being inducted into political parties and fielded in the electoral fray, personal attacks by politicians and others.

In terms of alliances, a key feature was the Congress' inability to stitch together any meaningful coalitions. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was formally inducted into the party and given charge of Uttar Pradesh East, but the Congress was rejected by the SP-BSP. Another feature was the BJP's bid to expand its footprint beyond what was witnessed in 2014, especially in West Bengal and Odisha. Bengal, where the campaigning was most heated, saw poll violence in each of the phases as Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool and the BJP's top brass including PM Modi and Amit Shah went hammer and tongs in their efforts.

The exit polls that were declared right after the end of phase 7 have projected a return to power for the NDA, with the Congress stumbling once again. It remains to be seen whether the BJP can repeat its stupendous 2014 performance when it won 282 seats. Simultaneously, it remains to be seen how much the Congress can improve its own tally, which reached its lowest ever point as the party won just 44 seats in the previous elections.
