Following the meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Congress leaders KC Venugopal, AK Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Randeep Singh Surjewala addressed the media and said that Rahul Gandhi presented his resignation which the CWC outrightly rejected.
Clarifying on the speculations around Rahul Gandhi's resignation, Randeep Singh Surjewala said:
"Congress president Rahul Gandhi in his address to the CWC offered his resignation which the CWC members unanimously and with one voice rejected and requested the Congress president for his guidance and leadership. CWC recommended the Congress president thorough introspection for a complete overall and a detailed re-structuring at every level. A plan about the same will come into play in the coming days. CWC will further inspect on the reasons for the same."
He then added that the Congress party has lost in numbers but in spirit, their determination to fight has not lost and they will continue to fight against hate.
This came after the meeting of CWC on Saturday at AICC HQ in Delhi, where UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and many Congress leaders across the country including including former PM Manmohan Singh, PC Chacko, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Shaktisinh Gohil, Rajeev Satav, Jatin Prasada, RPN Singh, PL Punia, Oomen Chandy, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, AK Antony, Mallikarjun Kharge, Kumari Sheilja, Harish Rawat, Sheila Dikshit, P Chidambaram and others were present.
After the humbling defeat of the Congress party and defeat of Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha elections 2019 from the Gandhi bastion of Amethi against BJP's Smriti Irani by 55120 votes, CWC met wherein Rahul Gandhi tendered his resignation.
Criticising the party, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia called it a 'political drama. He said while speaking to Republic TV:
"There is nothing but political drama. There is not one person who can master the courage to speak the truth in front of the dynasty, they have been worshipping the dynasty. Today is another drama episode that Rahul Gandhi is offering his resignation to his mother, and she will convince the CWC members to reject it."
