The Lok Sabha election to the Indore seat is especially significant in 2019 for it will witness the prestigious constituency getting a new member of Parliament for the first time in decades. In a two sword fight, BJP candidate Shankar Lalwani who is a former Indore Development Authority chief and his Congress opponent Pankaj Sanghvi bid to succeed Sumitra Mahajan, the Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha.

BJP's Sharkar Lalwani emerges victorious. Defeats Congress opponent Pankaj Sanghvi with a huge margin of 5,47,754 votes.

Campaign and Agenda:

The election agenda for Indore revolved around the waiver of farm loans. More specifically, whether the Congress had kept its promise of waiver within 10 days of coming to power in the state - something that M.P CM Kamal Nath later admitted that he hadn’t been able to fulfill, after Republic’s ‘Operation Karz Maafi’ had shown as much.

2014 Lok Sabha Elections:

Like many other constituencies in Madhya Pradesh, the Indore parliamentary constituency has been one where although the Congress gained prominence initially, in later years it shifted fairly comprehensively to the BJP.

BJP’s Sumitra Mahajan, popularly called Tai, represented the Indore Lok Sabha in Madhya Pradesh for eight consecutive terms since 1989. In 2014, she had defeated Congress’ Satyanarayan Patel by a hefty margin of 4.66 lakh votes. She wasn’t given a ticket by the BJP in 2019.
