2019 Lok Sabha Election Results For Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh: State BJP Chief Mahendra Nath Pandey Retains His Parliamentary Constituency Against SP's Sanjay Singh

In one of the crucial battles of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in India’s largest state of Uttar Pradesh, Chandauli Parliamentary constituency saw a triangular fight between state BJP president Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey of Bharatiya Janata Party, Samajwadi Party’s Sanjay Singh Chauhan and Congress ally Jan Adhikar Party’s Shivkanya Kushwaha.

As the figures by the Election Commission after the final counting of votes, BJP's Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey has retained his Chandauli seat, with the count showing him to be on 47.07 percent votes and his rival SP's Sanjay Singh on 45.79 percent votes. 

Ahead of the counting of votes, controversy had triggered in the constituency with a group of SP-BSP alliance and Congress workers having alleged that electronic voting machines (EVMs) were being changed at the instance of the BJP party.

In the 2019 polls, the BJP had renominated sitting MP Mahendra Nath Pandey who had won the constituency with over 4 lakh votes and defeated BSP’s Anil Kumar Maurya in 2014 polls. Subsequently, after his win, Pandey was made a member of Standing Committee on Rural Development and Consultative Committee for Ministry of Steel and Mines in the state.

On 5 July 2016, in a major cabinet reshuffle, Pandey took oath as Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development in the Narendra Modi ministry. However, he was later replaced by Satyapal Singh in August 2017, following which he was appointed as the chief of Uttar Pradesh unit of the BJP replacing Keshav Prasad Maurya on the same day.

The parliamentary constituency comprises of five assembly segments: Mughalsarai, Sakaldiha, Saiyadraja, Ajagara and Shivpur. Chandauli, which is a key constituency in Uttar Pradesh which sends the maximum number of MPs to the Parliament, went to polls in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 19. The total number of voters in the constituency is 1,446,259, out of which 7,90,196 are men and 6,50,063 are women.
