Smriti Irani will begin her two-day campaigning in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Her rallies are a part of the BJP's Vijay Sankalp Kisan Morcha Sammelan. She will be addressing a Kisan Rally in Parshedpur at the Gyaan Bharti Inter College on Thursday. She will also address a public meeting in Salon.

Amethi is Congress bastion. Smriti's opponent in the constituency Rahul Gandhi is a three-time MP from the seat. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Irani had lost to Gandhi by a margin of over 1.07 lakh votes.

The BJP leader has gone all-out in terms of her own contributions in Amethi over the last five years, holding a series of rallies, with PM Narendra Modi doing the same just weeks earlier at the inauguration of an ordnance manufacturing unit.

Her poll opponent in Amethi will also be fighting the elections from Wayanad. He will file his nomination by 11 AM on Thursday, senior party leader Ramesh Chennithala said.

Senior Congress leader and AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala, Mukul Wasnik said Gandhi's sister and AICC in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would accompany him to Wayanad.

Wasnik also claimed that the announcement of Gandhi's candidature had enthused the people of the constituency. "The entire Congress party and the UDF had invited Rahul ji to contest in Kerala. Similar invitations were extended from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Finally taking into consideration, the feelings of the party members and the alliance partners, Rahulji decided to contest in Wayanad. Since the time this announcement was made, we can see tremendous enthusiasm among the party members and the people," he told reporters here.

When it was speculated that Gandhi would be fighting from Wayanad as well as Amethi, Irani had taken a dig at the Gandhi scion.

The Textiles minister had suggested that the grand old party is concerned about Rahul Gandhi losing the Amethi seat to her, and hence, is finding another safe seat for him.
