As the political heat intensifies in India in the run-up to the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha elections, political parties are engaged in various antics to garner votes for their respective parties. In a brazen violation of the Election Commission of India’s model code of conduct, a Samajwadi Party leader from Madhya Pradesh exhorted his party workers to vote even on behalf of those people who don’t want to.

“Ye hamare karyakartaon ka kartavya banta hai ki gaon mein jaayein, jo log vote nahi daal rahe hain, unse parchi le aaye aur parchi laa karke vote daalo (It is the duty of our party workers to go to every village and get the voter details and vote for those who are not willing to vote),” Samajwadi Party leader RR Bansal said during an interaction with party workers in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur.

In a near similar incident, a BJP leader campaigning in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut is the latest to raise the outrage. In reference to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, BJP's Jayakaran Gupta said "skirt wali bai" in what was interpreted as a reference to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi.

"One Congress leader loudly asks, acche din aaye (did you see good times)? They can't see acche din when a skirt waali bai is visiting temples in saris and those who avoid Ganga waters are treating it as holy," Gupta said at public rally.
