Diamond Harbour went to poll in the last phase of the 2019 General Elections in West Bengal amid several violent clashes across the region, following which Left parties also demanded repolling in the Parliamentary Constituency citing large-scale irregularities in polling. Amid the violence, BJP’s candidate from the constituency Nilanjan Roy's car was also vandalized, with the saffron party and the Trinamool accusing each other of the clashes. The violent clashes further triggered the Election Commission to suspend election campaigning in the state ahead of the final phase of elections by 24 hours.

Before 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the constituency was a CPI(M) party citadel from 1967-2009 with a significant votebank of the Left, which was won by Somendra Nath Mitra of the Trinamool in 2009
Known for his ground-level network, Abhishek Banerjee won the polls becoming the 26-year-old Member of Parliament in 2014 elections. Youngest MP in the Lower House of the Parliament, he is often called as the "cub of the 16 Lok Sabha".
