Arunachal Pradesh Lok Sabha Election 2024: Arunachal Pradesh held elections in a single phase to elect two members of Parliament from the state. The total number of constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh are two: Arunachal East and Arunachal West. The two Lok Sabha seats in the north-eastern state holds significant importance in the regional political scene. The Arunachal West constituency and the Arunachal East constituency in the state of Arunachal Pradesh went to polls on April 19.
In 2019 Lok Sabha polls, BJP candidate Tapir Gao won the Arunachal East constituency with a margin of 69948 votes, while BJP candidate Kiren Rijiju won the Arunachal West constituency, with a margin of 1,74,843 votes.
Arunchal West Seat
Union minister and BJP candidate Kiren Rijiju won the Arunachal West Lok Sabha seat, defeating his nearest rival Nabam Tuki of the Congress. Rijiju, the Earth Sciences Minister in the Narendra Modi cabinet has been representing the Arunachal Pradesh West seat since 2004, except for one term. He lost to Congress’ Takam Sanjay in 2009. Altogether eight candidates contested the seat, elections for which were held in the first phase on April 19, along with assembly polls in the northeastern state.
Arunachal East Seat
In Arunachal East, despite facing flak for being outspoken, two-time Lok Sabha member Tapir Gao won by defeating his nearest rival Bosiram Siram by a margin of 30,421 votes, continues to be a popular leader. The 60-year-old lost the seat in 2009 and 2014 elections but remained loyal to the BJP and its ideology. In the 2019 polls, he made a strong comeback and was elected to the Lok Sabha for the second time by defeating Congress’ Lowangcha Wanglat. Gao’s outspokenness can be gauged from the fact that he has not spared his party in the Parliament.
