New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will likely appoint state presidents for a few states after their office-holders have been featured in the Union Council of Ministers, as per media reports.
The saffron party will appoint state chiefs for Gujarat, Telangana and West Bengal as the state heads have been featured in the Cabinet. Furthermore, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan are also likely to get new chiefs as the party performed below expectations during the Lok Sabha polls.
These state chiefs will be appointed by the new national BJP President in place of JP Nadda, who now has been appointed as the Union Health Minister on Monday following the first meeting of the newly-formed Prime Minister Narendra Modi Cabinet. However, no name has been finalised yet but will be announced in the coming days.
Gujarat: In Gujarat, the state's president and four-time MP was inducted into the Union Cabinet, after his term as the chief ended a few months ago but was asked to continue until Lok Sabha Polls. This time, BJP's stronghold as per reports, may get an OBC leader.
The probable names are Jagdish Vishwakarma, a junior minister with independent charge in CM Bhupendra Patel-led government, and Purnesh Modi, a three-time MLA and a prominent OBC face in Gujarat. As per party leaders, Devusinh Chauhan, a sitting MP from Kheda who also served as a junior communications minister in the previous Narendra Modi government but was not included in the latest cabinet, is also being considered for the post of Gujarat BJP president.
Telangana: After state president Kishan Reddy has been inducted into the Union Council of Ministers, as per party leaders Telangana too can get an OBC BJP Chief. OBC leader, MP Eatala Rajender who joined the party in 2019 can be appointed as state president, as per a state leader.
West Bengal: In West Bengal, post-Lok Sabha polls BJP President Sukanta Majumdar has now been inducted as a minister at the Centre in the recent Modi 3.0 allocation. State party leaders are expecting a new BJP president and there is a speculation the party may opt for a leader who can 'take everyone along.' Majumdar has been accused of not taking veteran party leaders into confidence when making major policy decisions and the party’s state unit has been riven since then.
Tamil Nadu: The southern state may get a new state president amid friction between supporters of former party chief Tamilisai Soundararajan and current head K Annamalai. A certain section of the saffron party is demanding Annamalai be sacked accusing the party’s chances in the state by breaking the tie-up with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Rajasthan: In Rajasthan, the Bharatiya Janata Party is looking at a major reorganisation after securing just 14 seats in the recent general polls. The names being considered for the new state chief include Rajendra Gehlot, Kuldeep Dhankar, Madan Rathore and former leader of opposition Rajendra Rathore, according to party leaders who revealed this information on the condition of anonymity.
