'Deeply concerned over the increasing incidents of political violence in West Bengal', says Home Minister Rajnath Singh after clashes at Amit Shah's roadshow in Kolkata

Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday tweeted about the violence in West Bengal since the beginning of the Lok Sabha elections and the FIR against BJP chief Amit Shah. Sharply criticising the West Bengal government for the unhinged violence, he accused Mamata Banerjee of  misusing the state machinery to stifle democratic rights of the people.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday tweeted about the violence in West Bengal since the beginning of the Lok Sabha elections and the FIR against BJP chief Amit Shah.

Sharply criticising the West Bengal government for the unhinged violence, he accused Mamata Banerjee of  misusing the state machinery to stifle democratic rights of the people.

He also expressed concerns about law and order situation in the state.

On Tuesday, sticks were hurled at Amit Shah’s truck and at the Police who were manning the crowd at Shah's roadshow. Black flags were waved, held placards and raised anti-BJP slogans outside the University of Calcutta.

Soon after, a scuffle broke out between Trinamool workers and the BJP workers, following which the Police resorted to lathi-charge.

In the aftermath of the violent clashes, a BJP delegation led by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi met the Election Commission in New Delhi and demanded that CM Mamata Banerjee should be banned from election campaigning ahead of the seventh and final phase of the polls.

Later, on Wednesday, Amit Shah countered Trinamool's allegation that BJP had vandalised the bust of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in Vidyasagar college and slammed her government for continued violence in the state.
