EXCLUSIVE: Here's how the JD(S)-Congress power-sharing in the incoming Karnataka government will be decided

With the BJP's Yeddyurappa sensationally resigning as Karnataka Chief Minister even before the critical floor test was to begin, presumably because he didn't have the required support, the biggest task ahead of the HD Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) alliance is to align their MLAs and ensure they are able to prove their majority in the house.

And now, Republic TV has ascertained inside details of the most important aspects that will determine whether or not the post-poll alliance passes that crucial test.

As per Congress high-command sources, the Rahul Gandhi-led party which had offered its unconditional support to the JD(S) after the results were announced, will recommend an immediate floor test once Kumaraswamy is sworn in as Chief Minister. Following the floor test, a coordination committee of the two parties will meet and it is there that the ministry-sharing between them will be finalised.

According to sources, Congress president Rahul Gandhi will come to Bengaluru for the swearing-in at the Kanteerava Stadium. Kumaraswamy had said that he would personally invite both Sonia and Rahul Gandhi to his swearing-in, which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23.

As things stand, Republic TV has learnt that the Congress has demanded 20 ministries while the JD(S) will have 13 to14. However, the portfolios will be decided at the coordination meeting.

Crucially it will be the Congress that will decide who will be the Deputy Chief Minister. The matter is said to be contentious as both G Parmeshwara, the state party chief, and the influential DK Shivakumar who was Energy minister in the erstwhile Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka Government are said to be in the running.

The Congress had won 78 seats and the JD(S), 37 seats. They also have the support of three other MLAs bringing their tally to 118. However, as Kumaraswamy won from two constituencies, that total stands at 117. The BJP, meanwhile, has 104 MLAs, whereas 112 is the requirement for a majority.
