Haryana Election Results Updates: BJP Eyes Hattrick, Congress Celebration Paused

The vote share of the BJP and Congress turned out to be close even though the saffron party won the elections with a simple majority. The BJP received 39.94 per cent votes, while the Congress managed 39.09 per cent in the assembly polls.

Both parties got more votes this time than the last state polls but the Congress saw a 11 percentage point jump, significantly more than BJP's three percentage point rise.

In 2019 assembly polls, when the BJP won 40 seats out of 90 in the assembly, its vote share was 36.49 per cent. The Congress, meanwhile, had a 28.08 per cent vote share for its 31 seats.

The BJP is set to retain power and form its third straight government, a historic first for the state, after winning 48 seats in the 2024 assembly polls. The Congress, which was predicted to win by many exit polls, won 37 seats, according to the Election Commission website.

Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina, known as the party's 'poster boy' in the region, has led the BJP to its best-ever performance in the assembly polls with 29 seats, even as he failed to retain his Nowshera assembly seat.

"I have accepted the verdict of people. I thank them for their support," said Raina, whose leadership has helped the party navigate the complex political landscape of the Union Territory, especially after the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir.

Former BJP MP and ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Tuesday said wrestler Vinesh Phogat 's win in the Haryana Assembly elections is a result of the “power” of his name.

"If she wins by using my name, it means I am a great man. At least my name has enough power to help her sail through,” he said while addressing an event.

Seven independent candidates have emerged victorious in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls, marking an increase from the 2014 elections when three such candidates had won.

Satesh Sharma, who left the Congress and contested as an independent from the Chhamb seat of the Jammu region, won the election by defeating BJP candidate Rajeev Sharma with a margin of 6,929 votes. Satesh Sharma, 42, who is son of two-time MP and former Congress minister Madan Lal Sharma, polled 33,985 votes.

Alleging a conspiracy, the Congress on Tuesday said it would not accept the Haryana Assembly poll result as it raises “serious questions” about the integrity of the instruments of the democratic system.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Haryana result is a victory of manipulations, and subverting the will of people. He also alleged that it is a defeat of the transparent and democratic processes.

Ramesh claimed there were “serious issues” with the counting process and the functioning of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) in around 14 constituencies and that Congress would take up the matter with the Election Commission soon.

Jindal polled 49,231 votes while the Congress candidate secured 30,290 votes.
