West Bengal Beharampur Lok Sabha Constituency Live Updates: After holding on to Beharampur for over 25 years, senior Congress leader has been beaten by debutant Yusuf Pathan by 85,000 votes. Since the start of counting, Beharampur was witnessing a see-saw battle with even BJP candidate Dr Nirmal Saha taking the lead at one point of time. As Saha was leading by nearly 1000 votes, Adhir was placed at second. Coming back from behind, Yusuf quickly wiped out the trail and has now extended his lead over his challenger Adhir. According to the initial trends, Adhir was in the lead.
Sitting MP since 1999, Congress' Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury faces a tough three-way battle for Murshidabad's Beharampur constituency. TMC, Congress' INDI ally at The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha believes that Mamata Banerjee going solo in the state without INDI allies will further strengthen the BJP in a seat where minorities form a significant vote-bank.
Beharampur has been a stronghold for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 1999. Adhir defeated Pramothes Mukherjee, sitting MP from Revolutionary Socialist Party, by 95,391 votes on October, and has been the sitting MP there ever since. Now, Adhir faces the toughest battle of his political career with both TMC's Yusuf Pathan and BJP's Nirmal Kumar Saha. His fate in electoral politics hangs in balance as he has said repeatedly that he will quit if he loses from his stronghold.
