The incident happened on Saturday night in Chandpur of Kaliganj police station. Hafizul Sheikh was playing carrom board at a tea shop in that area, claimed the local police. At that time some miscreants came there on a motorbike and fired at Hafizul. He died on the spot. Enraged by police inaction, the agitated crowd started protesting around the cops, demanding the arrest of the culprits as the police of Devagram outpost came to recover the dead body.

The locals claimed that few assailants came dressed like cops in khaki uniforms, according to local reports. Bengal has been marred by poll violence in all seven phases of voting. With barely three days to go for the Lok Sabha results, this murder in TMC candidate Mahua Moitra's constituency has stirred a political storm in the state.

Demanding a CBI probe, the slain leader's brother told media that a power local TMC leader, along with his associates, fired two bullets at Hafizul in broad daylight as he was playing carrom. He further claimed that the TMC workers went ahead and attacked other BJP workers' houses with bombs.
