Kannauj Election 2024 Result LIVE: Counting of votes has begun at 8am for the high-profile seat of Kannauj on Tuesday, June 4. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is contesting from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat as the INDI alliance candidate, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Subrat Pathak from the seat. Subrat Pathak had won Kannauj seat for the BJP in 2019 Lok Sabha election, defeating Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav. Akhilesh had earlier fielded Lalu Yadav's son-in-law and sitting Mainpuri MP Tej Pratap from Kannauj. However, after party workers' demand, Akhilesh himself filed the nomination papers from Kannauj. Voting on Kannauj seat was held on May 13 in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
Kannauj has traditionally been a Samajwadi Party bastion with Akhilesh Yadav winning the seat first in 2000. He later went on to represent Kannauj in 2004 and 2009. He vacated the seat after he became the Uttar Pradesh chief minister in 2012, and his wife Dimple Yadav won the by-election unopposed. Dimple also won in 2014 but lost the seat to BJP's Subrat Pathak in 2019. Akhilesh, an MLA from the Karhal assembly seat in Mainpuri, is the Leader of Opposition in the UP assembly.
