New Delhi: In a significant departure for the Gandhi family from the historical ties with UP’s Amethi and Rae Bareli constituencies, sources say that both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are likely to skip their old family bastions for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Sonia Gandhi had already ended her Lok Sabha candidature from Rae Bareli. Union minister Smriti Irani was already fielded to contest from Amethi by the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

While the Raebareli seat was previously held by Sonia Gandhi. Both the seats are considered bastions of the Gandhi family.

Sources also said that party workers were told not to work on those lines in the two constituencies.

Interestingly, there was a growing clamour earlier for fielding Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Rae Bareli and Rahul Gandhi from Amethi in the two Lok Sabha constituencies for the upcoming elections.

A Rae Bareli Congress delegation had recently met top Congress leaders in New Delhi, suggesting that All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Priyanka Gandhi should contest from the Rae Bareli seat. Similarly, Amethi Congress leaders were reportedly willing to field senior party leader Rahul Gandhi from the Amethi seat.

The Congress recently released its first list of 39 candidates, including Rahul Gandhi from Kerala's Wayanad, for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Rahul Gandhi had lost the sought-after seat of Amethi to BJP's Smriti Irani in the 2019 general elections.

There Has Been Demand from UP Carded that Rahul and Priyanka Contest from Amethi and Rae Bareli: Udit Raj

When asked to comment on the matter, Congress leader Udit Raj said, “Unless and until it is officially communicated to us, how can say Rahul will not contest from Amethi. I cannot comment on it unless it is officially told to us. There have been love and affection for Rahul and Priyanka in Amethi and Rae Bareli. There has been demand by UP carded that they should contest from the two respective constituencies.”

“Let the CEC meet happen; only then it will be clear from where Rahul Gandhi And Priyanka Gandhi will be contesting for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,” he added.
