BJP pulled off a surprise win for the 10th seat in UP. BJP's Harsh Mahajan emerged victorious from Himachal's lone seat while Cong won 3 seats from Karnataka.

Rajya Sabha Elections 2024 Results Updates: Amid day-long drama over cross-voting, MLAs switching sides and missing legislators in Himachal, BJP on Tuesday put up a stellar show by winning 11 out of 15 seats across three states. BJP emerged victorious from Himachal Pradesh's lone seat much to everyone's surprise. Congress, enjoying a clear majority in the Vidhan Sabha, was confident of sending Abhishek Manu Singhvi to the Upper House. However, that was not to be as BJP's Harsh Mahajan won the seat after a tie, In Karnataka, Congress defeated the BJP-JDS combine to win 3 out of 4 seats. The battle for the fourth seat was between Congress's GC Chandrashekhar and JDS' Kupendra Reddy. However, Reddy fell short by 10 first preference votes with Congress emerging victorious. 41 of the 56 members have already been elected unopposed, leaving the three states to witness heated contests between the BJP and the INDIA bloc. The elected members include former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, BJP chief JP Nadda, Ashok Chavan, and union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan.

After 9 MLAs cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha elections from Himachal, all of them, including 6 Congress MLAs and 3 Independents, have been shifted to a separate location and have been placed under CRPF protection. According to our sources, they will be taken from Shimla to Panchkula. The voting has now been stopped by the Election Commission after BJP objected on vote of one MLA brought by CM Sukku in chopper for RS vote. That means SP candidates have to bag at least 111 first-preference votes to get 3 out of 10 seats that are going to polls.

DK Shivakumar Responds on Cross-Voting Buzz 

“I have not seen it. It is a secret ballot vote. In the state, this alliance cannot go well. BJP had 65 votes or something, they could have got 45 and their candidate elected. They have taken 48 votes which shows that BJP legislators are not interested in voting for JD(S). BJP legislators do not want to vote for JD(S), hence out of 45, they have taken 48 votes,” said Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar on cross-voting by BJP MLAs.

While speaking on Rajya Sabha elections, Karnataka Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad said, "There will be no cross-voting. Congress candidates will get more votes than required. If people from some other party want to vote for us, then we won't say no to it."

 

9 RLD MLAs cross vote for BJP

As many as nine RLD MLAs have voted for the BJP,  RLD said. In a tweet the party posted, "All nine MLAs of the party together and unanimously voted for Bharatiya Janata Party's Rajya Sabha candidate, Sanjay Seth ji. Rashtriya Lok Dal's vote is in favor of farmers, youth, poor, and women…(sic)"

BJP MLA ST Somashekhar has cross voted for Congress, confirmed BJP agent and VP Sunil Kumar Karkala. BJP chief whip Doddana Gowda has decided to take a strict action against Somashekhar. He is likely to get disqualified.

Voting underway for four RS seats in Karnataka as Congress eyes rival camp support

Amid cross-voting fears, voting in the elections for the four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka is underway on Tuesday, with the ruling Congress claiming it could get support from the rival camp. Fearing cross-voting, both the Congress and the BJP-JD(S) alliance huddled their MLAs in a private resort on Monday and held a workshop for the new members on the election process and how to cast their votes. The Congress has 133 MLAs, excluding the Speaker, while the BJP and JD(S) have 66 and 19 legislators respectively, in the 223-member House. Others account for four. However, one Congress MLA died on Sunday. Congress sources claimed that the party has the support of four others.

 

UP: Voting in Rajya Sabha Polls Underway, Keen Contest Likely on One of 10 Seats

Voting is underway in the elections for the 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday with eight BJP candidates and three from the Samajwadi Party in the fray.
